My kids love to hike and that love they have for the outdoors and hiking has been handed down to my grandchildren. My oldest daughter also loves St. George and frequently comes down to visit. This past week she and the kids came down to spend some time enjoying the desert heat (ha!) and do a little hiking.
One of my daughter’s favorite hikes is Kanarraville Falls Slot Canyon. Knowing that I suggested we hike the Zion Narrows this trip.
I take groups up the narrows several times each summer and really enjoy the hike. It’s the best place to get out of the heat and see the best of Zion’s “straight up land.”
Take the Zion Canyon shuttle from the visitors center in Springdale to the last stop (Temple of Sinawava). To get to the hike you must first take the one mile Riverside Walk to the Narrows trailhead. Shuttle Schedule
The majority of the hike is in the Virgin River, which is part of the adventure. The best way to negotiate the rocky bottom of the river is to take a walking stick and wear boots with rubber soles. If you don’t have what you need (most people don’t) a good place to rent sticks, canyoneering boots and neoprene socks is at Zion Outfitter located in Zion Canyon Village right at the entrance to the park in Springdale. The package is $24 for the day.
Go early! Beat the crowd, reduce wait time standing in line for a shuttle and enjoy the solitude of the canyon. The first shuttle leaves at 6:00 AM during the busy season. Zion Outfitter opens at 7:00 AM, if possible rent what you need the night before.
Take a daypack and water. You should always take water and depending on how far up the canyon you go, take a lunch and/or snacks. There are plenty of places to stop for a picnic.
Purchase a waterproof case for your camera or take a dry sack to put your valuables in. Ziplock baggies won’t be enough if your pack gets submerged in the river. I learned this lesson the hard way and damaged my cell phone and had to replace it.
You will get wet. Wear appropriate clothing, swim suits or dry-fit clothing that dries quickly. During the summer months your clothes will be dry by the time you reach the shuttle.
Check weather conditions at the visitors center or online at https://www.nps.gov/zion/index.htm Flash flooding is a real possibility when thunderstorms are present. I generally check weather conditions for not only Washington County but also for Cedar City and Kane County (Kanab). Frequent thunderstorms occur during the Monsoon season that generally runs from mid-July to mid to late September.
